Hugh
Caldin has practised as a solicitor in commercial law since
1972.

Hugh
was a solicitor with Clifford Chance (formerly Coward
Chance) between 1972 and 2001 and specialised in litigation
and arbitration arising out of international disputes
mainly of a "dry" maritime nature and also
handled a wide variety of general commercial disputes,
frequently with Spanish or Latin American parties.

Hugh was accredited as a mediator
in 1996, is a member of the ACI Mediation Panel and receives
appointments under the auspices of ACI. He was Administrator
for ACI from 2001 to 2003. He speaks and writes fluent Spanish
and Portuguese to a high standard and passable spoken and
written French. He regularly lectures in Spanish to visiting
postgraduate students from the Instituto Marítimo
Espanol of Madrid and the Faculty of Nautical Studies of
the Universitat Politectnica de Catalunya Barcelona and
has also delivered lectures in Argentina, Brazil, Chile,
Cuba, Venezuela, Spain and the Canary Islands.
Hugh
remains Overseas Consultant for ACI in developing mediation
in Spanish speaking countries.
